I have moved countries with children twice myself, so I always start with the family, not with the main applicant. Austria lets the family come on the same permit, but every member counts in money, language and quota. Checked on 27 October 2026.

Who can join

oesterreich.gv.at says family members of a holder of this permit can receive the same “Niederlassungsbewilligung, ausgenommen Erwerbstätigkeit”, and that a quota place may be needed. In practice this means a spouse or registered partner and minor children. BRIDGES writes that the spouse and minor children receive the status together with the applicant, and that each adult takes a separate quota place.

The money for a family

FamilyRequired per month (2026)
CoupleEUR 4,128.24
Couple with one childEUR 4,532.00
Couple with two childrenEUR 4,935.76

The base is twice the ASVG rates: EUR 4,128.24 for a couple plus EUR 403.76 for each child. The lines for children are my arithmetic from the official figures. Housing must suit the size of the family by local standards.

Language for each person

German A1 is needed at the first application for each person aged 14 and over. Children under 14 are exempt. So a spouse who has not started German is often what moves the filing date to the next year.

Documents for family members

In addition to the general list, family members show the marriage or birth certificate and proof that the person they join holds the corresponding permit. Foreign documents need an apostille or legalisation and a translation by a sworn court interpreter, unless they are in English.

Parents and adult children

I did not find a route for parents or adult children of a Privatier on the official pages I used, so I do not promise one. A parent with their own sufficient income could in principle apply for their own permit under the same rules, with their own quota place and A1. BRIDGES describes Austria as extremely cautious with elderly parents, and in one published case brought a father to the EU through Hungary instead.

My practical plan for families

  1. Count the income for the whole family at the coming January rates.
  2. Start German for every adult at the same time.
  3. Find housing that fits the family.
  4. File all applications together at the start of the year.

The filing steps are in the application guide, and the money in the income guide.

Questions and answers

How much more income does a family need?

A couple needs EUR 4,128.24 a month after running costs, and each child adds EUR 403.76 (2026 rates).

Does my spouse need German?

Yes. The A1 requirement applies to everyone aged 14 and over at the first application. BRIDGES also says the spouse proves A1 before filing.

Does each family member need a quota place?

The official page says family members may need a quota place. BRIDGES writes that each adult takes a separate quota place.

Can I bring my parents?

I found no specific route for parents of a Privatier on the official pages I used. BRIDGES describes Austria as very strict towards elderly parents and has solved such a case through Hungary.
